Formula E and HKT Hong Kong E-Prix Explained

(February 15, 2019, Hong Kong) – The 2019 HKT Hong Kong E-Prix will take place on Sunday March 10 on the Central Harbourfront street circuit with the world-renowned Hong Kong skyline as backdrop.

 

As the ABB FIA Formula E Championship continues to grow in popularity across the globe, and the HKT Hong Kong E-Prix firmly establishing itself as one of the key highlights in the city’s events calendar, fans are now more curious than ever before in learning more about the championship – its origin, what it stands for, and where it is heading.

 

As such, Formula E Racing (Hong Kong) Limited has created the following factsheet with key highlights to enhance the understanding of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship and the HKT Hong Kong E-Prix.

– The ABB FIA Formula E Championship (Formula E) is a class of motor racing that uses electric-powered cars only with the inaugural championship starting in Beijing in September 2014

– Now in season five, Formula E boasts of 13 races across five continents with 22 drivers competing for 11 teams

– For the first time, Asia will host three races – Ad Diriyah in Riyadh (race one), Hong Kong (race five), and Sanya in mainland China (race six)

– Hong Kong hosted two races last season, which were won by Sam Bird and Felix Rosenqvist, while Jean-Eric Vergne won the overall series

– The HKT Hong Kong E-Prix reaches 1.86km with 10 turns, including two hairpins, and a 555m main straight. The race format is 45 minutes plus one lap, which means once the 45 minutes is up drivers have to complete one extra lap .

– The Gen2 car, which made its debut this season, can touch 100km/h (60mph) in just 2.8 seconds, and go on to a top speed of 280km/h (174mph)

– With a new and improved battery, Gen2 cars can complete a full race with no pit stop

– One of the new on-track features this year is the ‘ATTACK MODE’, where drivers will be able to access 225kW of power via a special activation zones on the track (maximum power available during race mode is 200kW)

– FANBOOST will continue to allow fans to vote for their favourite driver to receive an extra boost of 100kJ of energy during the race

– BMW and Nissan joined Formula E this season, while Mercedes-Benz and Porsche confirmed their involvement from season six

[Hong Kong, January 29, 2019]: The 2019 HKT Hong Kong E-Prix will welcome back two of its biggest supporters with the confirmation of HKT and FWD as its Title and Platinum Sponsor respectively for the third year in a row.
Taking place on Sunday March 10 on the 1.86km Central Harbourfront street circuit with the iconic Hong Kong skyline as backdrop, the third edition of the HKT Hong Kong E-Prix is round five of the 2018/19 ABB FIA Formula E Championship.
As a premier platform in Asia on the future of sustainable mobility, race organisers Formula Electric Racing Hong Kong Ltd will once again join forces with the city’s leading telecommunications provider to showcase the industry’s latest in innovation and technological advances and educate the public on embracing the future through sustainable means.

With much of the Lung Wo Road Grandstand removed to make way for a bigger and better Allianz E-Village, visitors can look forward to a number of new initiatives that will further enhance the Formula E fan experience on race day. Formula E World will make its debut at the HKT Hong Kong E-Prix, offering a chance to connect with the future of sport – Formula E – through four unique and very different zones for in-depth exploration. The Driver Zone, Strategist Zone, Fan Zone, and E-Gen Zone will have all visitors enter full of curiosity and leave as a dedicated Formula E fan.
The highly popular Gaming Arena, which houses Formula E simulators for fans to drive around the virtual Central Harbourfront track, will see an increase to 20 simulators from eight last season.
iPads will be introduced at the Gaming Arena with the installation of an exciting, world’s first interactive racing, gaming, and viewing experience. ‘Virtually Live – Ghost Racing’ allows users to race against real drivers in real races – live. Participants will be able to test their skills against some of the best Formula E drivers in the world.
Since November, the ‘Race Around Hong Kong’ initiative has been making its way around the city for the general public to try the virtual Central Harbourfront street circuit through the simulators. Title sponsor HKT will host the finale in February in Experiential Zone at its “io.t by HKT” concept store at ELEMENTS shopping mall in Tsim Sha Tsui where participants who recorded the fastest lap times across the whole series will win 2019 HKT Hong Kong E-Prix BOSS | EMOTION CLUB tickets respectively.
Look out for the Formula E Adventure Tram, which will make its way between Causeway Bay and Sheung Wan on March 8 and 9, offering the funnest ride across Hong Kong Island for those cool enough to try. For eight hours each day, selected fans can create their unique ‘Sounds of the Electric Vehicle’ onboard through an immersive experience that reinterprets the Gen2 car engine sounds into personalised beats. Some of the Formula E drivers will also make an appearance at the Formula E Adventure Tram at certain times, making this fan activation one of the most sought after Instagrammable experiences of the campaign.

The 2019 Hong Kong E-Prix continues to offer entertainment for the entire family with an upgraded Allianz E-Village, in both size and entertainment offerings. Acting as a hub for education on the future of sustainable mobility education, this activity space is one of the best places to rock out over the Hong Kong E-Prix weekend.

 

Abutting the track but without direct views of the race, all of the action will be carried to spectators on TV screens in place around the Allianz E-Village.

 

The new Formula E World exhibition in the Allianz E-Village demonstrates the advances in battery and electric motor technology, while a new Kids Zone will satisfy and educate youth through immersive and entertaining experiences. The famed podium ceremony will continue to take place at the Allianz E-Village, and other opportunities to engage with the drivers include autograph sessions.

Hong Kong E-Prix ready to ignite with an enhanced fan experience

Sleek & futuristic Formula E Gen2 car competitive debut to spark a range of new and exciting features both on-and-off the track

 

The 2019 Hong Kong E-Prix will see a range of electrifying new features added to its programme as 22 drivers from 11 teams take to the city’s Harbourfront street circuit on Sunday, March 10.

 

Spearheaded by the debut of the long-awaited Formula E Gen2 car, which has almost double the range and energy storage capacity of the previous car, fans will be among the first in the region to witness the future of everyday electric road vehicles.

 

With no mid-race car swap, a new team in the HWA RACELAB, and Nissan e.dams replacing Renault, fans can expect more action on track than ever before.

 

FANBOOST, synonymous with Formula E, will continue to lead the way in innovative fan engagement at live events as once again FANBOOST allows them to vote for their favourite driver to receive an extra boost of 100kJ of energy during the race, giving fans a direct impact on the outcome.

 

While the iconic Hong Kong Harbourfront track remains unchanged with 10 turns and two hairpins, the addition of the new ‘Attack Mode’ is another on-track innovation that will impress speed lovers in 2019. Activated via special zones on the track, drivers will be able to access 225 kW power in Attack Mode with spectators able to identify which drivers are in mode through the illumination of LED Halos on the vehicles.

 

Season four champion Jean-Eric Vergne said:

Two months ago, Jaguar announced its I-PACE eTrophy will become the support series to season five of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. A race will feature at the Hong Kong E-Prix, and at the first ever Sanya E-Prix, two weeks after, giving ticket holders two full races, in addition to all of the practice and qualifying rounds, to immerse themselves in in 2019.

 

For fans who simply cannot wait till race day, a “Race Around Hong Kong” initiative has been developed for gaming fans and those dreaming of becoming race car drivers to compete on the virtual Harbourfront street circuit.

 

Through a partnership with Sideways Driving Club, simulators will be placed around Hong Kong for the public to experience the magic of Formula E. The overall winner of “Race Around Hong Kong” will get the opportunity to compete against the likes of season four champion Jean -Eric Vergne and Formula E debutant Felipe Massa at the Allianz E-Village Gaming Arena.

 

Ticket prices at the 2019 Hong Kong E-Prix across the Observation Wheel and Tamar Park grandstands are set at a uniform price of HK$2,880, which includes complementary access to the Allianz E-Village. The FIA Smart Cities Forum will gather an impressive array of mobility experts, city planners, metropolitan authorities, technology specialists, entrepreneurs, high-level political leaders and policy-makers to define the pathway for the future of mobility along the axes of sustainability and innovation .

 

The Forum will take place at the Formula E hospitality area, providing participants with an exclusive access to the Formula E track and innovations piloted by the racing teams.
